Age UK’s latest report on loneliness* suggests that the number of over 50s suffering from loneliness is set to reach two million by 2025/6. Retirement living specialist Mickle Hill in Pickering, North Yorkshire offers a solution by providing a friendly community that looks out for one another. Featuring a mixture of 168 one- and two-bedroom apartments as well as spaciously designed bungalows, the community benefits from a wide range of onsite amenities that helps to boost the residents’ social life.

Angela McKimmie, Sales and Marketing Director at Rangeford Villages, the development company behind Mickle Hill, comments: “We have created a community that not only provides a comfortable living environment but also supports residents’ general wellbeing. Being sociable by engaging with other residents and taking part in activities has proven to be very effective to combat loneliness.”

The village’s entertainment hub, called the ‘Pavilion’, boasts a cinema, gym, Jacuzzi, library and café bistro, giving residents numerous venues to meet up and spend time together. Adding to the community lifestyle is the hair and beauty salon, convenience shop and regular activities such as felting, calligraphy, crafts and art, singing, gardening, gym and gentle exercise, scrabble and board games.

Resident Janet Ainsworth, 76, who moved from the Lake District to Mickle Hill says: “I knew instantly this was just a wonderful place. It felt like home from the very start. There’s so much to do around here and it’s a beautiful area.”

To speed up the moving process, Janet opted for Mickle Hill’s part exchange scheme: “We wanted to move as early as we could. The staff at Mickle Hill helped us every step of the way to make the move go as efficiently as possible.” The sale of her former home was entirely handled by Rangeford Villages, freeing Janet from the stress and pressure of marketing her home and securing a quick sale. The process involves Rangeford working alongside external companies to sell her former home on her behalf and involves no estate fee.
